Pekan lalu komputer-komputer anyar keluaran Dell, Gateway dan lainnya sudah menggunakan chip terbaru Intel yang bernama cukup aneh, Core i7. Beberapa benchmark dan fiturnya menunjukkan bahwa Core i7 adalah prosesor yang buas. Apa maksudnya?
Intel mengembangkan chip ini dengan proses yang bernama tick-tock cycle. Tick adalah peningkatan dari mikroarsitektur, yaitu pengecilan ukuran untuk menciptakan
efisiensi yang lebih baik. Sedangkan tock berarti peluncuran mikroarsitektur yang sama sekali baru.Sebagai contoh, kita ambil Penryn. Penryn adalah tick dari Core 2, dengan ukuran yang mengecil proses 65-nanometer menjadi 45nm. Core i7 adalah tock karena
menggunakan mikroarsitektur yang sama sekali baru bernama Nehalem. Core i7 Nehalem merupakan sebuah langkah maju yang dramatis sekaligus menebus kekurangan arsitektur Intel sebelumnya yang mampu dimanfaatkan oleh AMD. Selanjutnya mari kita lihat empat hal yang membuat chip ini sangat spesial:

1. Ucapkan Selamat Tinggal Pada Front-Side Bus
Setup front-side bus (FSB) sudah lama jadi ciri chip Intel, namun kini Intel
menyingkirkannya. FSB bertugas untuk mengantarkan data antara CPU dan
memory controller hub, tapi fungsinya tidak maksimal jika digunakan
pada chip multi inti. Intel menyiapkan QuickPath Interconnect (QPI)
sebagai pengganti FSB. QPI akan mengatasi masalah bottleneck yang
sering terjadi ini dan dapat meng-handle multi-inti dengan lebih baik
tentunya. QPI menggunakan direct point-to-point connections yang
mempunyai bandwidth sebesar 25GBps. Wow! Jauh lebih besar dari apa yang
ditawarkan FSB. Berbeda konfigurasi tentu saja berbeda ‘rumah’,
sehingga dibutuhkan motherboard yang lebih QPI-friendly. Konsep ini
mirip dengan yang dipunyai AMD dengan HyperTransport-nya.

3. Kembalinya Hyper-Threading
Intel membuang Hyper-Threading setelah Pentium 4, dan kini, di Core i7 (dan
Atom). Pada dasarnya, ini adalah teknik pemrosesan paralel yang mampu
menjalankan multiple threads secara simultan. Sebagai gambarannya,
teknik ini membagi tugas sedemikian rupa sehingga dapat dijalankan
berbarengan oleh prosesor.
Intel membuang Hyper-Threading setelah Pentium 4, dan kini, di Core i7 (dan

mengkostumisasi batas suhunya di BIOS. Asik, bukan? Dan saat ini CPU yang menanamkan Core i7 masih sedikit, dan semuanya masih untuk desktop. Kemungkinan Core i7 baru akan mengunjungi laptop tahun depan. Selain itu prosesor Intel Core i7 memiliki kecepatan 15-20% lebih tinggi dibandingkan procesor generasi sebelumnya. Secara garis besar dapat disebutkan spesifikasi processor Core i7 yang berbeda dengan processor - processor Intel sebelumnya, diantaranya :
1. Memiliki performa lebih tinggi dan lebih efisien dalam penggunaan energi dibandingkan dengan prosessor generasi sebelumnya.
2. FSB ( Front Side Bus) digantikan dengan QuickPath Interface. Sementara ini hanya chipset yang mendukung QuickPath Interface saja yang bisa menggunakan processor ini, misal chipset Intel X58.
3. Memory Controller ada dalam processor, tidak seperti yang sebelumnya terpisah dalam chip tersendiri. Dengan teknologi ini memori akan langsung terhubung dengan processor. Rupanya Intel cukup terkesan dengan pesaingnya –AMD yang sudah sejak lama menggunakan teknologi ini.
4. Support Three Channel Memory , tiap – tiap kanal berisi 2 slot memori, sehingga total slot yang ada dalam mainboard yang mendukung processor ini ada 6 slot. Tentu saja kapasitas memori yang bisa disupport oleh processor ini akan semakin besar.
5. Processor Core i7 sementara ini hanya mendukung memori jenis DDR 3.
6. Core i7 menggunakan single-die device : core (inti processor) , memory controller (kontrol memori), dan cache berada dalam satu die.
7. Menggunakan tipe socket baru yaitu Socket B ( Socket LGA 1366)
Selain hal-hal baru diatas, ternyata justru didalam processor Core i7 ini menggunakan kembali teknologi lama Intel Pentium yang sudah tidak diaplikasikan didalam generasi Intel Core, yaitu Hyper-Threading .
Dengan adanya teknologi Hyper-Threading ini dalam sistem operasi ( Windows,Linux, dll) seolah – olah inti processor akan menjadi 2 kali lipatnya, misalnya : dalam sistem operasi processor Core i7 4 core akan terdeteksi menjadi 8 core.
